Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata by German composer Carl Orff, composed in 1935–1936 and premiered in 1937. The work sets medieval Latin and Middle High German poems for large orchestra, chorus and soloists, employing driving rhythms, a simple modal-harmonic language and dramatic choral declamation that established Orff's distinctive approach to rhythm and text setting and situates the piece within 20th-century choral-orchestral repertoire.
