Messiah is an oratorio by Georg Friedrich Händel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. Scored for soloists, chorus and orchestra, it combines Baroque vocal writing, contrapuntal choral textures and expressive arias setting biblical texts, and it represents a key development in Händel's output as he consolidated his work in English-language sacred drama.
