Symphonies nos. 4 & 5
Album by Jean Sibelius & Berliner Philharmoniker & James Levine
Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 are orchestral works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, composed in 1911 and 1915 respectively. They illustrate Sibelius's development from late-Romantic expression towards a more concentrated, early-modern idiom, with No. 4 characterised by stark, dissonant textures and a terse, introspective mood, and No. 5 by broader melodic arcs and more expansive orchestration that point towards grander symphonic gestures in his later career.
