Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, composed in 1901–1902. Spanning five movements, it employs late-Romantic orchestration, extended brass and string writing, intricate counterpoint and wide dynamic contrasts, and marks a transition in Mahler's output from symphonies that incorporated vocal elements to a more purely instrumental, architecturally concentrated approach.
