Symphonies nos. 2 & 3
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & London Symphony Orchestra & Mstislav Rostropovich
Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 are orchestral works by Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, completed in 1927 and 1929 respectively. Both pieces employ a modernist harmonic language with prominent brass, percussion and choral finales that reflect engagement with Soviet political themes, and they occupy an early period in Shostakovich's career characterised by experimentation with large-scale forms and public, programmatic gestures.
