Symphonie Nr. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & Boston Symphony Orchestra & Seiji Ozawa
Symphonie Nr. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, composed in 1901–1902 and first performed in 1904. The purely orchestral work employs large-scale orchestration with striking brass and string writing, extensive contrapuntal development and stark contrasts of mood, and it marks Mahler's move away from the vocal-inclusive symphonies of his earlier period toward a fully instrumental symphonic approach in his career.
First released: 1991
