Five Pieces, Op. 16, Chamber Symphonies

Album by Arnold Schönberg & Prague Piano Duo

Five Pieces, Op. 16 and the Chamber Symphony No. 1, Op. 9, are orchestral and chamber works by Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, composed in 1909 and 1906 respectively. They exemplify Schoenberg's move away from late-Romantic tonality into free atonality and expressionist textures, characterised by concise motivic cells, novel orchestral colour and fragmented, often dissonant harmonic language that helped redefine early 20th-century modernist music.
