Symphonie No. 1

Album by Jean Sibelius & Wiener Philharmoniker & Leonard Bernstein

Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, completed and premiered in 1899. Rooted in the late-Romantic orchestral tradition, the work combines sweeping string melodies, bold brass writing and rhythmic vitality with hints of Finnish folk influence, and it marked Sibelius's emergence as a symphonist who would further refine his economical forms and distinctive orchestration in later works.
