Symphonie fantastique is a five-movement programme symphony by the French composer Hector Berlioz, composed in 1830. Its vivid orchestration, use of a recurring idée fixe as a unifying motif and dramatic depiction of an artist's passions and hallucinations mark an important development in Romantic orchestral writing and in Berlioz's own compositional career.
