Death and The Maiden

Death and the Maiden is the String Quartet No. 14 by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, composed in 1824. The quartet is in the late Classical to early Romantic style and features a sombre opening theme, rich harmonic language and contrapuntal texture, and it contains a set of variations based on material from an earlier song; it was written late in Schubert's life and reflects his turn towards more dramatic, expressive chamber writing.
