1812 Overture
Album by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky & London Philharmonic Orchestra & The Band of the Welsh Guards & Charles Mackerras
The 1812 Overture is a concert overture by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, completed in 1880. Scored for large orchestra and incorporating brass, percussion and cannon-like effects, the piece juxtaposes solemn hymn-like material with rousing marches and occupies a notable place in Tchaikovsky's output as a programme-driven, celebratory orchestral work reflecting nineteenth-century Russian nationalist tendencies.
