The 'Ride of the Valkyries' is an orchestral excerpt from the opera Die Walküre by German composer Richard Wagner, premiered in 1870. It is characterised by driving brass fanfares, vigorous rhythmic motifs and sweeping orchestration that exemplify Wagner's use of leitmotifs, and it occupies a prominent place within his Ring cycle as a frequently performed orchestral showpiece.
