Rosary Sonatas

Album by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber & Rachel Podger

Rosary Sonatas is a set of violin sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, first published around 1676. Composed in the Baroque period for solo violin and basso continuo, the sonatas employ varied scordatura tunings and a programmatic structure linking each piece to a mystery of the Rosary, placing them as a distinctive contribution to 17th-century violin repertoire and early programmatic instrumental music.
