Cello Concertos nos. 1 & 2
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Malmö SymfoniOrkester & James DePreist & Torleif Thedéen
Cello Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 are two cello concertos by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1959 and 1966 respectively. They showcase Shostakovich's mid- to late-period orchestral language for the instrument, blending brooding, often dissonant thematic material with lyrical passages and virtuosic solo writing that emphasise the dialogue between solo cello and orchestra, and they form a significant part of his late output and the 20th-century cello repertoire.
First released: January 1994
