Fidelio is a two-act opera by Ludwig van Beethoven, first performed in 1805. Musically, Fidelio is a German-language Singspiel in the rescue-opera tradition with classical-era orchestration, prominent choral writing and lyrical solo passages, and it was Beethoven's only opera, written during his middle period as he turned toward larger-scale instrumental forms.
