Written during the Second World War, it is a large-scale orchestral work that juxtaposes march-like and lyrical material, employing expansive orchestration, rhythmic ostinatos and bold brass and percussion writing, and it occupies a prominent place in Shostakovich's wartime output and in 20th-century symphonic repertoire.
