Symphonies nos. 2 & 3
Album by Jean Sibelius & City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra & Simon Rattle
Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 are orchestral works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, completed in 1902 and 1907 respectively. Stylistically they bridge Sibelius's late-Romantic roots and a more concise modernist approach, combining broad, sweeping themes, modal harmonies and Nordic atmosphere in the Second with leaner textures, clearer formal outlines and motivic economy in the Third, marking a pivotal stage in his symphonic development.
