Quartet for the End of Time
Album by Olivier Messiaen & Houston Symphony Chamber Players & Christoph Eschenbach
Quartet for the End of Time is a chamber composition by French composer Olivier Messiaen, composed and first performed in 1941. It combines modal harmony, complex rhythmic cycles and motifs inspired by birdsong and religious themes to create austere, meditative textures for an unconventional quartet, and it marks a pivotal work in Messiaen's early output and in twentieth-century chamber music.
