Symphony no. 9

Album by Gustav Mahler & Tonhalle‐Orchester Zürich & David Zinman

Symphony No. 9 is the ninth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1909. The four-movement late-Romantic orchestral work combines sweeping, often elegiac themes with fragmented motifs, stark contrasts and harmonic ambiguity that reflect Mahler's engagement with mortality and stylistic transition, and as his last completed symphony it occupies a pivotal place in his output while anticipating elements of early twentieth-century modernism.
