Album by Felix Mendelssohn & Jaime Laredo & Ani Kavafian & Heiichiro Ohyama & Kim Kashkashian & Sharon Robinson
String Quintets opp. 18 and 87 are a pair of chamber works by Felix Mendelssohn, composed in 1826 and 1845 respectively. Rooted in early Romantic chamber music, the quintets employ lyrical themes, close contrapuntal writing and expanded string sonorities with an added instrument, illustrating Mendelssohn's evolution from his youthful, classically inflected style to a more mature, expansive approach late in his career.
