Peter and the Wolf is a symphonic fairy-tale composition by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, written in 1936. Scored for a chamber-sized orchestra with each character represented by a solo instrument, it blends Russian melodic idioms and clear thematic writing to introduce orchestral timbres to young listeners and occupies an important place in Prokofiev's output for its explicit pedagogical and narrative aims.
