Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. The work is a large-scale late-Romantic symphony that traverses stark contrasts of mood and colour with dense, inventive orchestration and a prominent funeral-march opening, and it marks Mahler's decisive move away from vocal elements toward purely instrumental symphonic writing in his middle period.
