Symphony no. 2 & Symphony no. 4
Album by Johannes Brahms & Philharmonia Orchestra & Christoph von Dohnányi
Symphony No. 2 and Symphony No. 4 are orchestral symphonies by Johannes Brahms, completed in 1877 and 1885 respectively. Both exemplify Brahms's late Romantic idiom, characterised by lyrical themes, dense harmonic language and rigorous formal development, and together they occupy central positions in his symphonic output, with the Second tending towards a warmer, pastoral quality and the Fourth exhibiting a more concentrated, contrapuntal approach.
