Pithecanthropus Erectus

Album by Charles Mingus

Pithecanthropus Erectus is a studio album by American jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, released in 1956. The album blends hard bop roots with early avant-garde approaches, emphasising long-form compositions, collective improvisation and unconventional harmonic and rhythmic structures, and it signalled Mingus's move towards more compositionally ambitious and experimental directions that influenced the development of modern jazz.
