Symphony No. 3/Symphony No. 4
Album by Johannes Brahms & Houston Symphony & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra & Leopold Stokowski & William Steinberg
Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 4 are orchestral compositions by Johannes Brahms, composed in 1883 and 1885 respectively. Both works exemplify Brahms's late-Romantic orchestral idiom—rich, sonorous textures, inventive counterpoint and strong rhythmic momentum—and occupy a central place in his symphonic output, with the Third notable for its lyrical interweaving of motifs and the Fourth concluding his symphonic cycle with a passacaglia-based finale.
