Alexander Nevsky and Lieutenant Kijé are orchestral suites by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, composed for films and first presented in 1938 and 1934 respectively. Both works combine bold, modal-inflected melodies, robust orchestration and folkloric or martial gestures — Alexander Nevsky incorporating prominent choral writing drawn from the film and Lieutenant Kijé offering satirical, lyrical themes and inventive instrumental colour — and together they exemplify Prokofiev's mature engagement with film music and orchestral tone writing in the 1930s.
