The 18 Études

The 18 Études is a collection of piano études by Hungarian composer György Ligeti, completed in 2001. Composed late in his career, the études synthesise his interest in dense counterpoint and micropolyphony with intricate polyrhythms, disjunct figuration and influences from folk and non-Western rhythmic practices, producing technically demanding pieces that broadened the expressive and rhythmic possibilities of contemporary piano repertoire.
