Porgy and Bess

Porgy and Bess is an opera by American composer George Gershwin, first performed in 1935. Blending elements of jazz, blues and classical music in a through-composed orchestral score and conceived as a 'folk opera', it represents Gershwin's effort to synthesise popular American musical idioms with European concert traditions and marks a pivotal moment in his career and in 20th-century American musical history.
