Das Lied von der Erde is a symphonic song cycle by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1909 and first performed in 1911. Blending late-Romantic orchestral writing with solo vocal settings of translated Chinese poetry, the work pairs symphonic scale and intimate song textures through expansive orchestration and shifting moods, and occupies a central place in Mahler's late output where he confronted themes of mortality and farewell.
