Le Grand Macabre

Le Grand Macabre is an opera by Hungarian composer György Ligeti, premiered in 1978. The score combines avant-garde modernist techniques, including dense micropolyphony, abrupt shifts of texture and extended vocal effects, with grotesque humour, eclectic orchestration and elements of pastiche, representing a late-career move towards theatrical satire that contrasts with his earlier, more abstract choral and orchestral works.
