Symphony no. 1
Album by Gustav Mahler & Sir Georg Solti & London Symphony Orchestra
Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, composed in 1888. It blends late-Romantic orchestration with programmatic and folk-influenced elements, juxtaposing expansive melodies, varied orchestral colour and stark contrasts including a funeral-march episode, and it marks Mahler's emergence as a symphonist who expanded the form and expressive range of the orchestra in the late 19th century.
