The Protecting Veil
Album by John Tavener & Steven Isserlis & London Symphony Orchestra & Gennadi Nikolayevich Rozhdestvensky
The Protecting Veil is an album-length composition by British composer John Tavener, released in 1988. The piece pairs a solo cello with a string ensemble in a meditative, sacred idiom drawing on Eastern Orthodox chant, sustained drones and slow-moving, hymn-like textures, and it exemplifies Tavener's turn towards explicitly spiritual and mystical themes in his later output.
