Symphonies nos. 5 & 6
Album by Jean Sibelius & Helsingin kaupunginorkesteri & Paavo Berglund
Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6 are orchestral works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, composed in 1915 (No. 5, later revised in 1919) and 1923 (No. 6). They exemplify Sibelius's late-Romantic to early-modernist language, using expansive but economical orchestral textures, tightly wrought motivic development and Nordic-inflected harmony, and together they represent a turn towards greater structural concision and atmospheric subtlety in his symphonic output.
