Death and the Maiden
Album by Franz Schubert & Takács Quartet
Death and the Maiden is a string quartet by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, written in 1824. The work is in a Romantic idiom with stark contrasts between turbulent and lyrical passages, bold harmonic shifts and a sombre slow movement, and it was written in the final year of Schubert's life when his chamber music moved toward greater complexity and chromaticism.
