Symphonies Nos. 6 & 11
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra & Paavo Berglund
Symphonies Nos. 6 and 11 are orchestral works by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich, composed in 1939 and 1957 respectively. Musically they contrast sharply: the Sixth is episodic and introspective, characterised by stark orchestral colours and abrupt shifts of mood, while the Eleventh is more overtly programme-driven and march-inflected, reflecting a later, more publicly oriented phase in Shostakovich's career.
