Symphony no. 8

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Mravinsky

Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65 is the eighth symphony by Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and first performed in 1943. The work is a large-scale, four-movement symphony characterised by sombre orchestration, stark dissonance and extended march-like and elegiac passages that reflect wartime circumstances and mark a shift toward a darker, more introspective phase in Shostakovich's mid-career output.
First released: 2004
