Alexander Nevsky / Scythian Suite is a release of orchestral works by Sergei Prokofiev, pairing the cantata adapted from his 1938 film score with the Scythian Suite, composed in 1915. The programme juxtaposes the cantata's dramatic, choral-led, narrative-driven writing—characterised by bold orchestral gestures and stark contrasts—with the Scythian Suite's earlier, primitivist emphasis on driving rhythms, dense orchestration and dissonant harmonies, illustrating Prokofiev's development from avant-garde experiments to more programme-driven orchestral work.
