Controversy is the fourth studio album by American musician Prince, released in 1981. The album blends funk, rock, new wave and synth-pop with provocative lyrical themes of identity, sexuality and faith, representing a stylistic development from his earlier minimalist recordings toward more polished pop-soul experimentation that helped define his early-1980s direction.
