Symphony no. 12, op. 112 “1917”
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra & Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Mravinsky
Symphony No. 12 in D minor, Op. 112 '1917' is the twelfth symphony by Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, completed in 1961. Scored for large orchestra, it uses sombre brass and percussion motifs, dense string textures and march-like episodes to evoke aspects of the 1917 Russian Revolution, and it occupies a late-period place in Shostakovich's output as an example of his engagement with programme-oriented and politically charged composition.
First released: 2nd July 1992
