Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. A late-Romantic orchestral work, it is characterised by dense, large-scale instrumentation, dramatic contrasts between sombre brass fanfares and lyrical string and woodwind passages, and represents Mahler's first purely instrumental symphony, marking a turn away from the vocal forces used in his earlier symphonies.
