Cello Sonatas 3 & 5
Album by Ludwig van Beethoven & Jacqueline du Pré & Stephen Kovacevich
Cello Sonatas Nos. 3 and 5 are cello sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven, composed in 1808 and 1815 respectively. Musically, the earlier sonata displays the middle-period balance and lyrical dialogue between cello and piano, while the later sonata reflects Beethoven's late-period interest in formal compression, contrapuntal texture and economy of material, and together they mark significant developments in the cello-and-piano repertoire.
