Preludes and Nocturnes are collections of solo piano works by Frédéric Chopin, composed and published between the 1820s and the 1840s. They typify Chopin's Romantic-era pianism through concise, expressive miniatures, refined chromaticism, lyrical bel canto-inspired melodies and flexible rubato, and they occupy a central place in his oeuvre as explorations of intimate pianistic expression that helped shape the nineteenth-century piano repertoire.
