Die Fledermaus is an operetta by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, first performed in 1874. The work exemplifies the Viennese operetta tradition with lilting waltz motifs, brisk ensemble passages and effervescent orchestration, and it occupies a central place in Strauss's output as a synthesis of his dance compositions and theatrical writing.
