Symphonies 4 & 5
Album by Jean Sibelius & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra & Lorin Maazel
Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 are orchestral works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, completed in 1911 and 1915 respectively. Musically they contrast Sibelius's darker, more austere, modernist harmonic language in the Fourth with the broader, more expansive orchestral gestures of the Fifth, and together they represent a key phase in his middle-career development and in the evolution of early 20th-century symphonic writing.
First released: 16th July 1991
