When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d
Album by Paul Hindemith & William Stone & Jan DeGaetani & Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus & Robert Shaw
When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd is an oratorio by German composer Paul Hindemith, completed in 1946. The work sets Walt Whitman's poem for baritone, chorus and orchestra, employing Hindemith's characteristic contrapuntal textures, robust orchestration and post-tonal harmonic language, and it occupies a notable place in his mid-period output as a large-scale vocal-orchestral response to themes of mourning and remembrance.
