Vespers
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & Radiokören & Tõnu Kaljuste
Vespers (All-Night Vigil) is a choral composition by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov, completed in 1915. Rooted in Russian Orthodox chant and traditional liturgical melodies, it employs modal harmonies, expansive choral textures and a prominent low-bass register to produce a sombre, richly layered sound, and it represents a late-Romantic culmination of Rachmaninov's sacred choral writing on the eve of his emigration.
