Symphony No. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & Junge Deutsche Philharmonie & Rudolf Barshai
Symphony No. 5 is a symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. A large-scale late-Romantic orchestral work, it is Mahler's first purely instrumental symphony and is characterised by expansive orchestration, stark dynamic contrasts and a sequence of contrasting movements that mark a shift from his earlier song-inflected approach towards a more purely symphonic, modernist idiom in his later works.
