Symphonies no. 2 "To October" / no. 5
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Eliahu Inbal & Wiener Symphoniker
Symphonies No. 2 and No. 5 are orchestral works by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1927 and 1937 respectively. The earlier work is short and experimental with choral elements reflecting early Soviet modernism, while the later symphony is a large-scale, formally structured work written in the wake of official criticism and marks a pronounced shift in Shostakovich's approach to symphonic writing and public-facing composition.
