Symphonie no. 9
Album by Gustav Mahler & Giuseppe Sinopoli & Philharmonia Orchestra
Symphony No. 9 is the ninth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1909 and first performed in 1912. It is a late-Romantic orchestral work characterised by expansive forms, intricate orchestration, shifting tonality and a mix of lyrical and austere textures, and as Mahler's final completed symphony it occupies a transitional place in his output while pointing towards several twentieth-century developments in orchestral writing.
