Symphony no. 14
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra & Vasily Petrenko
Symphony No. 14 is a vocal symphony by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, completed in 1969. Scored for soprano, bass and chamber orchestra, it sets a sequence of poems on death in stark, often atonal textures with an economy of forces, and represents a late-period departure from his large-scale symphonic canvases toward concentrated, text-driven expression.
